Semi-Annual Economic Report for 2009 Released

The 2009 Semi-Annual Economic Report compiles all available economic indicators as at end of June 2009 and shows their percentage change since end of June 2008. Among the significant changes are as follows:

Credit to the private sector from the commercial banks increased by 21.7%.

The report also highlights challenges in the following areas:

. Merchandise imports fell by 13.0%;
. Current work permits fell by 7.6%, largely on account of declines in construction, financial services and
tourism related services;
. Total value of work permits plummeted by 17.0%;
. New company registration fell by 46.2%;
. Central government’s fiscal deficit widened;
. Total visitor arrivals fell by 7.2% and
. Mutual funds licenses fell by 2.1%.
