Government’s Social Services Expanded in 2011

The Hon. Premier and Minister of Finance Mr. McKeeva Bush is pleased to note that the Government’s education, health and social services expanded in 2011 as reported in ⫿The Cayman Islands' Compendium of Statistics 2011.??? ⫿This shows the Government’s flexibility in responding to the needs of the community despite the economic challenges,??? he also stated.

Total enrolment in government primary and secondary schools increased slightly in 2011 by 0.6 percent compared to 2010 to reach 4,890 students. However, enrolment in the private sector for the same type of schooling fell by 4.3 percent in 2011 to 2,756.

Service indicators of the Health Services Authority showed significant growths in major and minor operations, outpatient and casualty visits, home visits and dentals clinic visits. Total discharges in Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac fell from 5,669 in 2010 to 5,562 in 2011, while district clinic visits also declined from 38,799 in 2010 to 37,955 in 2011.

Services from all programs of the Department of Children and Family Services rose in 2011 from the levels a year ago. The total number of persons assisted during the year reached 8,989, 14.4 percent higher compared to 2010. Of these clients, 4,343 remained active at the end of the year. Unlike previous years, housing assistance was also provided in 2011 benefitting seven (7) persons.
