Labour Force Surveys

The Labour Force Survey (LFS):

Labour Force Surveys are statistical surveys conducted by the Economic and Statistics Office designed to capture data about the labour market twice annually. The main measures include economic activity and inactivity, all aspects of people's work, job-search for the unemployed, education and training, income from work and benefits.

The Labour Force comprises persons 15 years and over residing in the country who are employed or actively seeking work during the reference period. It is also used as the basis for population estimates. The LFS seeks information on respondents' circumstances and their labour market status during a specific reference period, normally one week, immediately prior to the interview.

The LFS is a random sample survey. This means that not every household will be surveyed, and those selected are done so purely by chance using a computer algorithm. However, since all households have an equal chance of selection, the more often the survey is conducted, the higher the chance of repeat selection. The same household address is also not eligible for selection during the same year.

Labour Force Surveys are carried out in many countries around the world. The International Labour Organization (ILO) has published recommendations concerning the concepts and definitions used in LFS, which are customised and adopted for use in the Cayman Islands.

The LFS data reported to the Economics and Statistics Office (ESO) are treated in strict confidence and used for statistical purposes, and results are published in aggregate form only.
